The birdbath is as necessary for a robin as it is for us.  After swimming they preen and put on their fine frocks and flit throughout the garden to entice their lover and to escape their obligations for awhile.....that is....until their ravenous chicks cry out for food.

The Assessment...lavender and flax

The image in the mirror reflects her silken skin and somber eyes.  She wonders if she has added too many silk flowers  and if this look is appropriate for schoolteacher, Ann, of Avonlea.  Adjusting the neckline and fretting with her magical image, she assesses that it is "just right" and the school play will go on. 

River Blue

Even in the winter warm barren golden weeds line the river like a woolen scarf.  A small lone wooden barn near the base of the mountains shelters livestock. Oh glorious day!

Breakthrough

There is so much blue in the sky and so much light in the sunlit clouds that I can never decide where to stop and start.  I love our world and sort of imagine the mysteriousness. 

This was a late evening shot from my back deck. Now it looks like an early evening shot from somewhere else.

I really enjoyed making the clouds and mountains float and disappear against the sky horizon.

Last Light

Stars. Sails and Sea

On a failed painting, I attached some Japanese rice paper and began adding color a little at a time until something clicked.  First I thought this would make a fluffy kind of bird, but quickly decided it was a stormy sea with a sailboat confronting the waves and water.   It is not exactly the type of painting I usually do but I like it.  I like the colors, the shapes, the texture and the illusive thought that it is pretty non representational.  The conception came with the doing....kind of backwards from planning a carefully thought out composition. It will be available tomorrow June 15, 2013, at the demo at Dale Street Cafe

Tulips and Apples in April

My students and I set up a still life with vase, flowers, small bowl with a handle, some apples and a cloth on a table.  I try to show them how to get the composition right by making several thumbnails of various views and then choose the one we each like best.  Next we layer washes, letting each one dry so that the colors stay bright.  We punch the darks as necessary and let the painting tell us where we need to express some freedom of strokes and splatters.  We step back often from our work making sure that some of the colors marry together .

Little boys just know how to have fun, romp and tumble,  and play rough.  They fall and get up, skin their knees, giggle and throw sticks.  They are irresistable!  You can chase them for hours and you wear out long before they do. Their eyes sparkle and grins win your hearts.

Whimsy, wrapping paper, brightly colored posies, a  little plaid,  and boxes all remind me of happy birthday.  It may remind you of something different, though.  This is the sequel to the piece called lemon refreshment.   Lines, dots, boxes and flower shapes all made with a palette knife.  It is a fun piece that calls out to you like happy birthday song.

"A Naturally Beautiful Colorado Garden"

On Monday before my demo everything was perfect.  Sunshine, light and shadow, and ....oops...I forgot my paper towels and my paints.  What to do? There was a nice sturdy flat rock to put my pallet on which did have some paints leftover and I did have some thinner, so I decided it was enough to capture the essence in a loose manner.  Boy it was hot!  Later after returning home I finished the painting with a good photo.  You cannot beat Colorado for beauty!

"Porch Petunias"

Frothy, flirty perky petunias on my front porch remind me of a cool ice cream cone on the 4th of July.  So much fun to paint and so fragile.  Dripping over the side of a pretty ceramic container, the poor things have recovered from hail and deer.  They look darned good right now, don't they? The great thing about canvas, is that it can be washed pretty clean if the paint hasn't dried, and you can begin again, as I did, with a ghost image.

"Rocky Mountain Presence"

When you visit the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, you will be amazed at the variety of of colors, light, shapes and animals.  When the freshness of a sparkling, cascading stream fills your warm hands with cool liquid and you see the bubbling in the shadows  around the boulders, you can't help but consider how different it is from everyday living.  This is a magical, spiritual, natural, pristene habitat.  Can you find the bear?

"Columbines For Bruce"

This painting was created last night for a friend of mine who found her son of 47 had died in his sleep.  He was one of my son's best friends, and a Colorado kid.  So, Bruce, these Columbines (Colorado flower) are for you.  Rest in peace. We are sad to lose you, but I know you are resting in the big arms of our Savior and "feelin' the love".  We will all miss you with your beautiful blue eyes and happy smile, and silly sense of humor.

This is done in a watercolor style, all wet and washy and 

fun. I added lime greens, buttercup yellow, lavender, a few

 touches of coral and brilliant blue colors together on a wet

 canvas and using my spray bottle letting it float and do its

 own thing with just a few odd touches, it looks pretty in

 every direction. Does it say springtime to you?

The falls are about 20 ft high and can be seen from the highway. The lavender foggy sky made the lush landscape look greener than ever and the mist fell on our raincoats and umbrellas. Aaah!
