My grandma always called it "eyeballing".  I thought that was amazing, because one of her eyes looked like a marble.  She had glaucoma, yet still sewed quilts.  One for each of her many grandchildren when they turned 16.  I used to ride the trolly with her in Pueblo in the 40's when I was a little girl.
